The Only Show You Need to Watch This Fall

By Shakila Caldwell–

Looking to utilize your free time or plan a future study break? If so, get ready to set your DVRs and put streaming in full effect because here is a show that you cannot miss. Scandal is back with a BANG and “Olitz” is back in full force. The political thriller Scandal is part of ABC’S TGIT (Thank God It’s Thursday) programming block. It follows former White House Communications Director, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and her team known as Olivia Pope and Associates as they fight to protect the images of the nation’s elite. Although Pope tries hard to leave her past behind, it is not as easy as she thought it would be. From messing with a married man, Fitzgerald Grant III (Tony Goldwyn) the President of the United States to the buried lies within, Scandal is sure to give you the thrill you are looking for. Three episodes into the fifth season and it is already on fire. If you are not one the many people already watching Scandal, here are five reasons why you should tune in this fall.

1.) Making History: Scandal is the first dramatic television network show written by a black woman, which has a black woman in a leading role. Also, it is only the fourth hour long show to air in primetime. Scandal also makes Kerry Washington the first black woman to star in a network drama in 40 years.

2.) Kerry Washington: Kerry Washington is a beautiful, powerful, educated woman who does an exceptional job of playing a strong female lead. Washington is complex and fearless at what she does. She exemplifies change, culture, and empowerment. Do you really need any other reason to watch Scandal?

3.) Olitz: If you already follow the show then you know the journey of Olitz has been a rough one. It hurt my heart when Olivia left Fitz for Jake in Season 4 to go “stand in the sun.” However, in season 5 their relationship is back and as steamy as ever. If you have not caught up on season 5 *SPOILER ALERT* because Olivia Pope has dropped a bomb. Did Olivia just admit to being Fitz’s mistress in front of multiple news cameras? I think YES. Sorry Mellie, it looks like you won’t be moving back into The White House like you thought.

4.) The Suspense: One of the hardest things to do in Scandal is to guess what is going to happen next. Writer Shonda Rhimes knows how to keep viewers on their toes. You have to be ready for a drastic change at any moment, because Scandal does that often. From Huck almost killing Quinn to Quinn almost killing Huck, and Fitz kicking Cyrus and Mellie out of The White House. It all just makes you say WHAT!?!?

5.) The Dialogue: A plot change isn’t the only way Shonda Rhimes keeps viewers on their toes, the dialogue plays a part as well. Action is a key part to a successful show, but dialogue is extremely important too. Dialogue makes or breaks a show. Scandal delivers the type of dialogue you want to hear. It is poignant and sharp and the show has managed to coin so many brilliant terms. Scandal doesn’t just have the action and drama, it also has amazing dialogue that keeps viewers continuously intrigued.
